Gallery 151 is pleased to present Intersections from Brooklyn-based artist Jamie Roadkill.

Jamie’s work features 24 karat gilded, anatomically accurate skeletons which are collected and processed by the artist from animals who have been killed on roadways.

Roadkill’s scenes comment on humanity’s lust for progress and bring into question the nature of ‘progress’ as history has defined it. Her use of roadkill carcasses as a raw material is symbolic of the hypocrisy of human beings tendency to label other living creatures as “vermin” while being the most cancerous, over populated species on earth. Roadkill uses 24 karat gold to gild the articulated skeletons as a means of restoring evident value to an animal that would have been discarded as common trash.

Inspired by the rich bodies of work of Jessica Joslin, Paul Koudounaris, Sarina Brewer, and Peter Beard, Roadkill reimagines a world where humans aren’t the only ones who have a say in who gets to live and die. Her work promotes necessary dialogue on life’s natural course and the social prejudice projected on death, and asks us to place a question mark at the end of our long held ideas about death.

Jamie also designs BONEDAGE, a couture line of fashion accessories featuring real bones. Roadkill is passionate about the integrity of her bone sourcing, and all of the bones in her work are consciously sourced and would have otherwise been discarded.
