Scene and Captured

Scene & Captured is a two part exhibit exploring creative solutions for waste management within the music scene, construction sites of New York City and beyond.

While humans have long been inspired to explore art peacefully within and in awe of nature, there is much more to be said from the perspectives of contemporary artists in, and different communities responses, to our industrialized and heavily packaged world. Through dedicated processes and observations, as well as introspection, artists of Scene and Captured magnify and examine the bizarre visual effects of modern civilization and human tendencies on nature and the communities around them. Whether through photographic insights, video, written dialog, or collected remnants, all works document the unpredictable beauty and uneasy reality of the aftermath perpetuated by our revelries and disposable culture and the repetitive paths which we interact.
As a part of Scene & Captured, Showpaper has curated an installation which aims to instigate a conversation amongst the all ages show space community it serves (through listing and distributing a single-sheet newsprint every two weeks that encapsulates that scene) by asking the show spaces listed in Showpaper to send photographs of the waste they have after a show. A pile of broken musical equipment, broken furniture, a flash photograph of the inside of a garbage can. These photographs are displayed geographically across a map of the Tri-State Area, along with a bookshelf filled with small tomes of cardboard (recycled from local show spaces), each inscribed with an idea on what can be done to recycle and reuse all this waste. When visitors come to the gallery for talks or events, they’ll be given their own cardboard tome for writing down notes and ideas inspired by the events, and encourage to leave them in the book shelf and help the collection of ideas grow. At the end of the installation all the best ideas will be collected into a small zine that will be mailed out to the same spaces the seeded the discussion with images of their waste
as solutions directly from the community.
