Opening: Thursday December 8th, 2016
Gallery 151 is pleased to present an exhibition of recently produced abstract paintings on canvas by John Platt. In previous years, this artist has infused his work with references to other genres as a means of reinterpreting the abstract expressionist gesture into the contemporary context. Now Platt shows us something more personal. With inspiration culled primarily from the artist’s months-long stays in Africa, these paintings are an autobiographical look at the individual’s place in the natural world, as well as the dialogue between experience and memory. Here we see the artist working from instinct, rather than intellect, his palettes evoking joy, hope, longing and mystery.
